Facing the Umbrian valley with its striking facade of white and pink stone from Mount Subasio, the Basilica of Saint Clare in Assisi honours the first and most faithful disciple of Saint Francis, foundress of the Poor Clares. Begun in 1257, four years after her death, it received her body beneath the high altar in 1260; her remains, rediscovered intact in their skeleton in 1850, now rest in the crypt, venerated by pilgrims. The basilica also guards the Crucifix of San Damiano, the painted cross that spoke to young Francis, calling him to rebuild God's Church; the feast of Saint Clare is celebrated on 11 August.
