Rising alone above the plain of Galilee, Mount Tabor is honoured by ancient tradition as the mountain of the Transfiguration, where Jesus appeared in glory before Peter, James and John, conversing with Moses and Elijah. On its summit, the Franciscan Church of the Transfiguration, designed by Antonio Barluzzi and completed in 1924, rises over the remains of Byzantine churches of the fourth to sixth centuries and of a twelfth-century Crusader church. Its two towers hold chapels dedicated to Moses and Elijah, echoing the three tents Peter wished to build, and pilgrims climb the holy mountain in great numbers for the feast of the Transfiguration on 6 August.
