In the heart of the Indonesian capital, Jakarta Cathedral, officially the Church of Saint Mary of the Assumption, is the seat of the Archdiocese of Jakarta and the mother church of Catholics in the world's largest Muslim-majority country. The present neo-Gothic building, designed by Father Antonius Dijkmans, was consecrated on 21 April 1901, replacing the earlier cathedral that had collapsed in 1890; its three slender spires include the twin towers rising sixty metres. Standing directly opposite the great Istiqlal Mosque, with which it even shares parking during major feasts, it has become a beloved symbol of interreligious harmony in Indonesia.
