In the heart of 's-Hertogenbosch, the Cathedral Basilica of Saint John the Evangelist is the summit of Brabantine Gothic and the largest cathedral in the Netherlands, built from the late fourteenth to the early sixteenth century with an exuberance of sculpture: its double flying buttresses carry 96 carved figures climbing the arches, unique in the world. A collegiate church from 1366 and cathedral of the new Diocese of 's-Hertogenbosch from 1559, it received the title of basilica in 1929, and it guards the beloved miraculous statue of the Zoete Moeder, the Sweet Mother of Den Bosch, venerated since the fourteenth century and honoured each May by great pilgrimages.
