St. Leo IX, Pope
St. Leo IX, born Bruno of Egisheim-Dagsburg, was a German pope who reigned from 1049 to 1054 AD. He was known for his efforts to reform the Catholic Church and combat simony and clerical marriage. As pope, he held several Church councils and excommunicated the Patriarch of Constantinople, leading to the Great Schism between the Eastern and Western Churches. St. Leo IX is venerated for his piety, commitment to reform, and his role in shaping the medieval papacy. He is the patron saint of the Diocese of Strasbourg, France.
