Saint Marcellus, pope and martyr
Saint Marcellus was pope from 308 to 309 during a time of great turmoil in the Church due to the aftermath of the Diocletian persecution. His leadership was marked by efforts to restore order and penance among Christians who had lapsed under persecution. He faced opposition for his disciplinary measures and was eventually exiled by the authorities. Saint Marcellus died in exile and is venerated as a martyr for his steadfastness in faith.
