Saint Arnold Janssen, founder of the Society of the Divine Word
Arnold Janssen was born in 1837 in Goch, Germany, and was ordained a priest in 1861. Concerned for the Church's missionary work, he founded the Society of the Divine Word in Steyl, Netherlands, in 1875 to train and send missionaries abroad. He later established two congregations of religious women, the Servants of the Holy Spirit and the Servants of the Holy Spirit of Perpetual Adoration. He died in 1909 and was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2003. His religious families continue missionary and contemplative work around the world.
