Nuno Álvares Pereira

Saint Nuno Álvares Pereira was a Portuguese general and Carmelite friar. Born in 1360, he played a crucial role in preserving Portugal’s independence at the Battle of Aljubarrota. Later in life, he devoted himself to prayer and charitable works, joining the Carmelite Order. He is regarded as a national hero in Portugal and was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009.
