Francis of Paola
St. Francis of Paola (1416-1507) was an Italian hermit and the founder of the religious order known as the Minims. Born in Paola, Calabria, he dedicated his life to a life of prayer, asceticism, and service to the poor. He established the Minim order, which emphasized humility, penance, and the renunciation of worldly goods. St. Francis was known for his numerous miracles and healings, and was venerated as a saint during his lifetime. He is the patron saint of boatmen, mariners, naval officers, and naval pilots.
