St. Mary of Egypt (Saint Mary Aegyptica), Penitent
St. Mary of Egypt (c. 344 - c. 421) was a desert hermit and penitent who is highly venerated in the Eastern Orthodox and Catholic churches. Born in Egypt, she spent her early life in a life of sin and debauchery before experiencing a profound religious conversion while on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. She then retreated to the desert, where she spent the remainder of her life in solitude and prayer, doing penance for her past misdeeds. She is known for her intense spirituality, deep repentance, and miraculous encounters. St. Mary of Egypt is the patron saint of penitents and is commemorated on April 2nd.
