Saint Damien of Molokai

Saint Damien of Molokai

St. Damien de Veuster, also known as Saint Damien of Molokai, was a Belgian Roman Catholic priest who dedicated his life to caring for leprosy patients on the Hawaiian island of Molokai. Born in 1840, he joined the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary and was sent as a missionary to Hawaii in 1864. In 1873, he volunteered to minister to the leper colony on the island of Molokai, where he lived and worked until his own death from leprosy in 1889. Damien is known for his selfless service, compassion, and advocacy for the marginalized and those suffering from the disease. He is the patron saint of those with leprosy, HIV/AIDS, and outcasts.
