St. Ephrem, Deacon and Doctor of the Church

St. Ephrem, also known as Ephraim the Syrian, was a Syriac deacon and Doctor of the Church who lived in the 4th century. Born in Nisibis (modern-day Turkey) around 306 AD, he was a renowned theologian, hymn writer, and preacher, known for his defense of the Church and his eloquent writings on the mysteries of the faith. Ephrem spent much of his life in Edessa, where he established a school of theology and composed numerous hymns and biblical commentaries. He is venerated for his deep spirituality, his love for the Blessed Virgin Mary, and his contributions to the development of the Syriac liturgical tradition. St. Ephrem is the patron saint of spiritual directors and the Chaldean Catholic Church.
