St. Joseph of Anchieta
St. Joseph of Anchieta (1534-1597) was a Jesuit priest, missionary, and linguist from the Canary Islands. He played a crucial role in the evangelization of Brazil and the establishment of the colony. Anchieta learned the indigenous Tupi language and used it to translate Christian texts, preach the Gospel, and facilitate communication between the Portuguese and the native populations. He founded several cities and established schools and hospitals, earning him the title of "Apostle of Brazil." Anchieta is venerated for his tireless efforts to spread Catholicism, his commitment to social justice, and his work in preserving indigenous cultures.
