Saint Alban, protomartyr of Britain
Saint Alban is venerated as the first British Christian martyr. He lived in the Roman city of Verulamium (now St Albans, England) and sheltered a Christian priest fleeing persecution. Inspired by the priest's faith, Alban converted to Christianity and was arrested in the priest's place. He was executed for his faith around the third or fourth century and is honored as the protomartyr of Britain.
