St Paul I, Pope
St. Paul I was the pope from 757 to 767 AD. He was born in Rome and played a key role in defending the Papacy during the iconoclastic controversy. As pope, he strengthened ties with the Frankish kingdom and helped establish the Papal States. Paul I is venerated for his defense of Catholic doctrine and his efforts to preserve the independence of the Church. He is the patron saint of Rome.
