Saint Peter, the Apostle
Saint Peter, the Apostle, was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and is regarded as the first Pope of the Catholic Church. Originally a fisherman named Simon, he was called by Jesus to be a 'fisher of men.' Peter was recognized as the leader of the apostles and is known for his confession of faith and human weaknesses. He was martyred in Rome under Emperor Nero, traditionally being crucified upside down.
