Pope Saint Pontian

Pope Saint Pontian was the Bishop of Rome from 230 to 235 AD. During the persecution of Christians under Emperor Maximinus Thrax, he was arrested and exiled to the mines of Sardinia. There, he became the first pope to abdicate his office to allow for the election of a successor.
