Bernard of Clairvaux

St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153 AD) was a French monk and abbot who played a major role in the revitalization of Benedictine monasticism in the 12th century. Born in Fontaine-lès-Dijon, he joined the Cistercian Order and later founded the Abbey of Clairvaux. As a theologian and preacher, he was a leading figure of the Catholic Church, authoring numerous spiritual works and sermons. He is venerated as a Doctor of the Church for his influential writings and his role in resolving theological controversies of his time. St. Bernard is the patron saint of beekeepers, candle makers, and the Cistercian Order.
