Sidonius Apollinaris
Sidonius Apollinaris (c. 430–c. 489) was a Gallo-Roman aristocrat, poet, and later bishop of Clermont in central Gaul. He lived through the collapse of Roman authority in the West and used his position to defend his city amid political turmoil and invasions. His letters and poems are a major source for understanding late antique Gaul, blending classical culture with Christian leadership. Venerated as a saint, he is remembered for pastoral courage, learning, and fidelity in a difficult age.
