Saint Isaac Jogues, Jesuit martyr of North America
Saint Isaac Jogues was a 17th-century French Jesuit missionary who evangelized among the indigenous peoples of North America. He endured great hardships and was captured and tortured by the Mohawk tribe while preaching the Gospel. After escaping, he returned to serve again and ultimately was martyred near present-day New York in 1646. Jogues is remembered for his courage, faith, and devotion to the mission.
