René Goupil
Saint René Goupil was a French Jesuit missionary and layperson who served in New France (present-day Canada) during the 17th century. He is one of the North American Martyrs, a group of missionaries who were martyred while evangelizing the Native American peoples. René Goupil was known for his deep faith, humility, and compassion towards the sick, as he worked as a surgeon. He was captured and tortured by the Iroquois, ultimately giving his life for his faith. He is venerated as a martyr and canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1930.
