Edmund the Martyr
Saint Edmund the Martyr was the king of East Anglia who ruled during the 9th century. He is known for his piety and his steadfast refusal to renounce his Christian faith during the Danish invasions. Edmund was captured and killed by the pagan Vikings in 869 AD, choosing martyrdom over betrayal of his faith. He became one of the most venerated English saints of the Middle Ages. His relics were once enshrined at Bury St Edmunds, a major pilgrimage site.
