St. John Damascene, priest and Doctor of the Church

St. John Damascene (c. 676-749 AD) was a prominent priest, theologian, and defender of Christian iconography in the Eastern Church. Born in Damascus, he served as an administrator in the Umayyad court before becoming a monk at the Monastery of Mar Saba near Jerusalem.
