St. Peter Canisius, Jesuit and Doctor of the Church

St. Peter Canisius (1521-1597) was a Jesuit priest, theologian, and Doctor of the Church. Born in the Netherlands, he played a crucial role in the Catholic Counter-Reformation, working to defend and spread Catholic doctrine across Europe. He was instrumental in establishing Jesuit colleges and seminaries, and his writings and catechisms were widely influential. Canisius is venerated for his unwavering commitment to the faith and his efforts to combat the spread of Protestantism. He is the patron saint of the city of Freiburg, Germany.
