Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, founder of the Sisters of Charity

Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, founder of the Sisters of Charity

Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton was the first native-born citizen of the United States to be canonized by the Catholic Church. Born in 1774, she converted from Episcopalianism to Catholicism after the death of her husband. She founded the Sisters of Charity, the first American religious congregation of women, and established schools and orphanages. Her faith, devotion to charity, and contributions to Catholic education have made her a model of holiness for American Catholics.
