St. John N. Neumann, Bishop of Philadelphia, United States
St. John N. Neumann was a Catholic priest and bishop who served as the fourth Bishop of Philadelphia from 1852 until his death in 1860. Born in Bohemia (now Czech Republic) in 1811, he joined the Redemptorist order and was ordained a priest in 1836. Neumann was known for his tireless work, founding the first Catholic diocesan school system in the United States and helping establish numerous Catholic schools, orphanages, and other institutions. He is the first male saint born in the United States to be canonized. St. Neumann is the patron saint of Catholic schools and Catholic education.
