St. Vitalian, Pope

St. Vitalian was the bishop of Rome from 657 to 672 AD. He was born in Segni, Italy, and is remembered for his efforts to strengthen the unity of the Church and promote ecclesiastical discipline. During his pontificate, he worked to resolve disputes between the Eastern and Western churches. Vitalian is also known for his patronage of the arts, as he commissioned the construction of several churches in Rome and encouraged the development of Gregorian chant.
