Charles the Great (Charlemagne)
Charlemagne, also known as Charles the Great, was King of the Franks and Lombards and became the first Holy Roman Emperor. He united much of Western and Central Europe during the early Middle Ages. Though not canonized by the Roman Catholic Church, he is venerated as Blessed in parts of the Church, especially in Germany and France. Charlemagne is renowned for his efforts in education, reforming the Church, and protecting Christianity. His legacy endures in European history and Christian culture.
