Saint Ethelburga, abbess of Barking
Saint Ethelburga, abbess of Barking, was an Anglo-Saxon noblewoman and the first abbess of the monastic community at Barking, founded in the 7th century in Essex, England. She was known for her holiness, wisdom, and leadership, guiding both nuns and monks. Ethelburga was the sister of Saint Erkenwald, Bishop of London, who founded the abbey for her. Her legacy was one of encouragement for religious life and charity. She died around 675 and is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church.
