Saint Pius V

Saint Pius V

St. Pius V was the Pope from 1566 to 1572. Born as Antonio Ghislieri in 1504 in Bosco, Italy, he joined the Dominican Order and rose through the ranks of the Church, becoming a cardinal in 1557. As Pope, he was known for his efforts to implement the reforms of the Council of Trent and his staunch defense of Catholic doctrine. He excommunicated Queen Elizabeth I of England for her Protestant policies and supported the Catholic League against the Ottoman Turks. Pius V is venerated for his piety, his defense of the faith, and his role in the victory of the Battle of Lepanto. He is the patron saint of the papal household.
