St. Gregory VII, Pope
St. Gregory VII, born Hildebrand, was a pivotal figure in the Catholic Church during the 11th century. He served as Pope from 1073 until his death in 1085. As Pope, he worked to reform the Church, fighting against simony and clerical marriage. He is remembered for his conflict with Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV over the issue of investiture. St. Gregory VII is venerated for his unwavering commitment to Church reform and his defense of papal authority. He is the patron saint of the Pontifical Gregorian University.
