Saint Emilio, martyr of Sardinia

Nothing certain is known about Saint Emilio's life. Tradition puts him in the 1st century as Bishop of Cagliari in Sardinia, and he is likely one of the four Sardinian martyrs listed in the Martyrology of St. Jerome. He is said to have been stoned to death during Nero's persecution, near Porta Cabagna in Cagliari, where a Romanesque church now stands. He is venerated across Sardinia, particularly in Sestu, and celebrated alongside Saints Felix, Priamo and Feliciano. His name appears in several variants, Emiliano and Gemiliano, and many other saints share it. A separate Emilio, Bishop of Benevento, appears in early episcopal lists but is not counted a saint, since Benevento's liturgical sources hold no trace of his supposed sanctity.
