St. Sixtus III, Pope
St. Sixtus III was the Pope of the Catholic Church from 432 to 440 AD. He was born in Rome and is known for his efforts to reconcile the Western and Eastern churches during the Nestorian controversy. Sixtus III oversaw the construction of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, one of the four major basilicas in Rome. He is venerated as a saint for his piety, his commitment to unity within the Church, and his devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. St. Sixtus III is the patron saint of Rome.
