St. Sergius I, pope
St. Sergius I was the Pope of the Catholic Church from 687 to 701 AD. He was born in Palermo, Sicily, and is known for his efforts to maintain the unity of the Church during a period of political turmoil. He resisted the attempts of Byzantine Emperor Justinian II to impose the Quinisext Council's decrees, which he deemed unacceptable. Sergius I is also remembered for his contributions to the liturgy and for the construction of several churches in Rome.
