Saint Lawrence Ruiz, martyr of Manila
Saint Lawrence Ruiz, martyr of Manila, was the first Filipino canonized saint. Born in Binondo, Manila, in the early 17th century, he lived a devout Catholic life. Fleeing persecution, he joined Dominican missionaries to Japan, where he was martyred in Nagasaki in 1637. He is venerated as a patron for Filipino youth, altar servers, and migrants.
