St. Callistus I, Pope and Martyr

St. Callistus I was the bishop of Rome from around 217 to 222 AD. He was born in Rome and was originally a slave, but later became a deacon and then the pope. As pope, he was known for his merciful attitude towards repentant sinners, which led to some controversy. He was eventually martyred for his faith during the persecution of Christians under Roman Emperor Alexander Severus. St. Callistus is venerated as the patron saint of cemetery workers and the caretakers of cemeteries.
