St. Hedwig, Duchesse of Polonia, Religious

St. Hedwig, Duchesse of Polonia, Religious

St. Hedwig, Duchess of Poland, was a prominent Catholic saint of the Middle Ages. Born around 1174 in Bavaria, she married Henry I the Bearded, Duke of Silesia and Poland, in 1186. Hedwig was known for her piety, charity, and devotion to the poor. She founded numerous hospitals, orphanages, and monasteries throughout her lifetime. After her husband's death in 1238, Hedwig retired to the Trebnitz Monastery, where she lived as a Cistercian nun until her own death in 1243. Hedwig is venerated as the patron saint of Silesia, orphans, and the Cistercian Order.
