St. Hilarion, Abbot

St. Hilarion, Abbot

St. Hilarion was born in 291 AD in Thabatha, near Gaza, in modern-day Palestine. He was one of the earliest Christian hermits and pioneers of monastic life in the desert. After studying in Alexandria, Hilarion became a disciple of St. Anthony the Great and lived as a hermit for over 20 years. He founded one of the first monasteries in Palestine and attracted many followers. Hilarion was known for his asceticism, miracles, and spiritual guidance. He died around 371 AD at the age of 80. St. Hilarion is venerated as the patron saint of monks and is invoked against temptation and depression.
