Sts. Andrew Dũng Lạc, and his companions, Martyrs
Saint Andrew Dũng-Lạc (1795–1839) was a Vietnamese diocesan priest, born Trần An Dũng, who took the name Lạc to evade arrest during the anti-Christian persecutions in Vietnam. He was beheaded in Hanoi on December 21, 1839, alongside the priest Peter Thi. He stands among 117 martyrs of Vietnam, killed between the 17th and 19th centuries, who included bishops, priests, and lay faithful of Vietnamese, Spanish, and French origin. They endured brutal tortures yet held firm in their faith, refusing to trample the cross. Pope John Paul II canonized the group together on June 19, 1988, in Rome.
