Saint Benedict Biscop, abbot of Wearmouth-Jarrow
Saint Benedict Biscop was an Anglo-Saxon nobleman who abandoned a career in royal service to embrace monastic life. He made several journeys to Rome, bringing back books, relics, and craftsmen that greatly enriched learning and liturgy in England. In 674 he founded the monastery of Wearmouth, followed by Jarrow in 681, establishing twin houses that became centers of scholarship. He assembled one of the finest libraries in early medieval England, which later supported the work of the Venerable Bede. His dedication to education and the arts left a lasting legacy on the English Church.
