St. Hyginus, Pope
St. Hyginus was the bishop of Rome from around 136 to 140 AD. He is believed to have been born in Greece and is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church. As pope, he is credited with establishing the hierarchy of the clergy and formalizing the structure of the Church. He is also said to have mandated that every church should have a priest, deacon, and subdeacon. St. Hyginus is the patron saint of philosophers and is commemorated on January 11th.
