Saint Charlotte, martyr of Compiègne
Saint Charlotte of the Resurrection was a French Carmelite nun and one of the Martyrs of Compiègne, a group of 16 nuns executed during the French Revolution in 1794 for refusing to renounce their faith. Her baptismal name was Anne-Marie-Madeleine-Françoise Thouret, later taking the religious name Charlotte during her vocation. She and her companions went to the guillotine singing hymns and forgiving their persecutors. Their courage inspired many, and their execution is believed to have helped bring an end to the Reign of Terror. She was beatified by Pope Pius X in 1906.
