St. Symmachus, Pope

St. Symmachus was the Pope of the Catholic Church from 498 to 514 AD. He was born in Sardinia and rose through the ranks of the Church, becoming a deacon and then being elected as Pope. During his papacy, he defended the Church's authority against the Arian heresy and the interference of the Byzantine emperor. He also worked to improve the administration and finances of the Church. St. Symmachus is venerated for his steadfast leadership and his efforts to strengthen the Catholic Church.
