John Gabriel Perboyre
Saint John Gabriel Perboyre was a French missionary priest and martyr in 19th-century China. Born in 1802, he joined the Congregation of the Mission (Vincentians) and volunteered for the China mission. He suffered persecution and was ultimately executed by strangulation in 1840 for steadfastly refusing to renounce his faith. He is the first canonized Chinese martyr. Perboyre was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1996.
