St. Januarius was a bishop of Benevento, Italy, who lived in the 4th century. He is venerated as a martyr for his faith, having been executed during the persecution of Christians under the Roman emperor Diocletian. Januarius is particularly renowned for the annual liquefaction of his blood, which is kept in a sealed glass ampoule in the Cathedral of Naples.
