Maurice
Sts. Maurice and Companions were a group of Roman soldiers who were martyred in 286 AD for their Christian faith. They were part of the Theban Legion, which was an all-Christian legion stationed in Gaul (modern-day Switzerland). When the legion refused to make sacrifices to the Roman gods, they were ordered to be executed. Maurice, as the leader of the legion, along with hundreds of his men, were killed for their unwavering devotion to Christ. They are venerated as early Christian martyrs who demonstrated courage and steadfastness in the face of persecution. St. Maurice is the patron saint of soldiers, armies, and the city of Magdeburg, Germany.
