Saint Dionysius, bishop of Paris
Saint Dionysius, bishop of Paris, was a third-century missionary sent from Italy to Gaul. He became the first bishop of Paris and is regarded as one of its patron saints. According to tradition, he was martyred by beheading on the hill of Montmartre, along with his companions Rusticus and Eleutherius. His courage and steadfast faith inspired many conversions and devotion throughout the region.
