Saint Francis Borgia, Jesuit superior general
Saint Francis Borgia (1510–1572) was a Spanish nobleman who served as Duke of Gandía before renouncing his title to join the Society of Jesus. After the death of his wife, Eleanor de Castro, he entered the Jesuit order and later became its third Superior General in 1565. He is credited with strengthening the Society's internal discipline and expanding its missionary and educational work. Francis also wrote spiritual treatises that influenced later Jesuit formation. He died in Rome in 1572 and was canonized by Pope Clement X in 1671.
