Saint Winifred, virgin martyr of Wales
Saint Winifred was a 7th-century Welsh holy woman venerated as a virgin martyr. According to tradition, she was the niece of Saint Beuno and dedicated her life to religious devotion. She is particularly associated with the holy well at Holywell in Flintshire, which bears her name and has long been a site of pilgrimage. Her cult became especially popular in medieval England and Wales. Little can be verified historically beyond her veneration and the enduring pilgrimage tradition connected to her name.
