St. John Gualbert, Abbot and Founder of the Vallombrosani Order, was born around 995 AD in Florence, Italy. After a dramatic conversion experience, he founded the Vallombrosan Benedictine Order in 1038. The order emphasized strict monastic observance, manual labor, and education. John served as the first Abbot of Vallombrosa Abbey until his death in 1073. He is venerated for his compassion, his commitment to reform, and his role in founding an influential monastic order. St. John Gualbert is the patron saint of foresters and the city of Vallombrosa.
